Liven up a classroom with one of these snowy ideas that avoid religious controversy.

Wintertime is approaching, bringing a big challenge for elementary public school teachers who want to create attractive classroom bulletin boards without upsetting or offending students with a variety of religious beliefs. Fortunately, there are many great ways to decorate bulletin boards without focusing on a specific holiday. Try one of these winter themed decorating ideas to make a great bulletin board that includes all of your students.

Make a Multicultural Winter Bulletin Board

For a classroom that has students with many different beliefs, a "Winter Celebration" board may be the perfect solution. Use a header that makes it clear that you are creating a bulletin board about all of the different winter holidays. A few ideas are:

  • Winter Celebrations Around the World - Below this header, center a big map of the world. Create a symbol key for the different holidays and place it in a corner of the map. Then, place the symbols on different countries to show children which holidays are celebrated where. For example, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all celebrated in the USA.
  • Who Celebrates What? - This bulletin board idea is perfect for classrooms with students from diverse backgrounds. Have each student bring in a picture of last year's winter celebration at his or her house and place the pictures on the board, leaving space for the students to attach a paragraph about how he or she celebrates that holiday.

Make a Snow Themed Bulletin Board

Most children love snow, so these are sure to be popular bulletin board themes. All of these ideas are really fabulous on a white felt or batting background.

  • Teamwork - This bulletin board idea shows how a group of children can work together to get things done and celebrates winter at the same time. Cut square shapes from white paper or felt and glue a child's photo to each shape. Stack the shapes to create an igloo on the board.
  • Rolling through Winter - Make a snowman for one side of the bulletin board, using felt. Then, cut round shapes from white paper and glue a child's photo to each circle. Stack the circles in a pyramid shape on the other side of the bulletin board to form a big snowball pile.
  • Children are Like Snowflakes - For this bulletin board idea, add a smaller subtitle that says "No Two are Alike" and cover the rest of the board with paper snowflakes that have the children's photos glued to the center of them.

Additional Winter Theme Ideas for Teachers

There are so many fun ideas for winter, from winter themed crafts to a science unit on snowflakes. Take advantage of a few of them and create an entire week of winter learning to celebrate the unveiling of your new bulletin board theme.
