Parent-to-school communication is essential for student success as it keeps the parents connected to the school environment.

Classroom Monthly Newsletter is a great tool to keep parents informed about the daily happenings in their child's classroom. A newsletter communicates to parents about important dates for their children, classroom rules, book selections and much more.

Newsletter Templates

Creating a monthly classroom newsletter is simplified if the teacher uses a free Microsoft school newsletter template. Microsoft has several templates that can be modified for the special needs of each classroom. Each newsletter template allows the teacher to add clip art or photos with minimal computer knowledge.

Before you download a free Microsoft newsletter template, the teacher needs to identify the information that is needed for her monthly newsletter. Classroom Teacher needs to ask what is the purpose of the newsletter. It's purpose could be to highlight student successes, upcoming events, important dates, homework tips, or a combination of all. Teacher tips, new topics for September, reading room, spotlight on math, educational websites, and field trips are ideas for subtitles for the classroom newsletter.

After the teacher knows the purpose, he will create a classroom newsletter template by modifying one of the free Microsoft school newsletter templates. The teacher needs to visit Microsoft to download a template by following the instructions. After the download is complete it will open in Microsoft Word for editing.

How to Create a Monthly Newsletter

For a monthly classroom newsletter, the teacher should create a standard newsletter that can be modified. For example, if the teacher wants to share birthday dates with the class he can have a birthday heading with a clip art of cake, each month he will only have to change the dates and names.

A teacher may choose to feature specific books each month or highlight student successes in the classroom. He may choose to include photographs of the students to add a little depth to the newsletter. Students will be excited to see their faces and be more willing to share with their parents. It is important the teacher displays a picture of each student in the class at least once, and be careful of not featuring one student continuously each month.

Lastly, gather input from students of what they would like to see in their classroom newsletter. Grade 1 to high school students have fabulous of ideas and by being a part of the process of creating a newsletter they are more willing to use it as a communication tool and share it with their parents. Favorite websites, special classroom moments, and student tips are just a few student generated ideas.

Keeping parents engaged in their child's education is key for academic success. A monthly classroom newsletter is one tool to keep the communication lines open between the teacher, student, and parent.
