Kindergarten teachers can make butterfly craft projects with primary kids during bug themed caterpillar and butterfly lesson plans.

Teaching Kindergarten kids about butterflies and caterpillars is a lot of fun. During a butterfly unit teachers and parents can teach students about the butterfly life cycle, read butterfly themed children’s books, and grow caterpillars into live butterflies.

Butterfly craft projects can be used to extend the learning during a lesson. Students can use bug themed activities to demonstrate their knowledge, absorb new information and become immersed in the butterfly topic.

How to Make Handprint Butterfly Puppets With Children

After reading butterfly children’s books students can create their own puppets using their handprints. The Kindergarten students can use the butterfly craft puppets to retell and act out parts of the story or to create their own insect adventure.

To make the butterfly puppet craft project the students trace the outline of their hands on cardstock. The kids then cut out their handprints and glue them to a craft stick or colored straw. They use art supplies to add features such as antennae and eyes to their puppet.

Teachers can use the children’s book It’s a Butterfly’s Life by Irene Kelly [Scholastic, 2007] to teach primary students all about butterflies. After learning about the different types of butterflies and the different stages caterpillars go through to become butterflies students can use fabric paint to make window cling crafts based on the book.

The kids draw and paint butterflies onto squares of wax paper using fabric paint. After the butterfly crafts have dried they are peeled from the wax paper and stuck to the windows.

Kindergarten Letter B Butterfly Bug Children’s Activity

Kindergarten students are busy practicing reading, writing, and sounding out different letters. While studying butterflies, the teacher draws the students’ attention to the B at the beginning of the word butterfly.

The students practice cutting uppercase Bs out of construction paper. The kids then take two of the Bs and put them together back to back to form butterfly wings. Next the children glue small strips of folded paper onto the butterflies for antennae and draw a face and body with crayons.

Fun butterfly crafts such as handprint butterfly puppets, butterfly window clings, and letter B butterflies are used by teachers to fully immerse students in a caterpillar and butterfly unit. After Kindergarten teachers complete the butterfly activities with students the craft projects can be used as part of a bug themed butterfly bulletin board or to hang around the classroom.
