Recycling Lesson Plan For Elementary KidsTeach Primary School Students How to Recycle During Science Class
Use the book Why Should I Recycle? to teach students how to recycle at home and at school. Then have kids demonstrate their knowledge by making a recycling commercial.
Recycling is necessary to reduce waste and maintain our planet. Elementary teachers can teach kids the importance of conservation by reading Why Should I Recycle? by Jen Green [Scholastic, 2006]. Students learn how to recycle and what happens at a recycling center then share their knowledge with other kids by making a recycling commercial. Recycling Elementary Lesson Plan IntroductionThe elementary teacher begins the recycling science lesson by showing the class a recycling bin and asking the students to share what they know about recycling. Students discuss the ways they recycle at home and at school. The science teacher asks the students why people should recycle. The teacher writes the students’ answers on the whiteboard under the question, “Why should I recycle?” The teacher asks the students how people recycle and writes their answers on the board under the question, “How do I recycle?” The science teacher tells the class that they will read the book, Why Should I Recycle? by Jen Green to find out more information about recycling. Recycling Lesson Plan for Elementary KidsThe elementary teacher reads Why Should I Recycle? to the class and discusses the book with the students. The class talks about what types of items are recycled in the book. The teacher and students list all of the items that are recycled in their school and in the community. The science teacher reviews pages 13 through 23. The class discusses what happens at a recycling center and the new items can be made from garbage. The class talks about reusing items and brainstorms ways that kids can help reduce waste by reusing things. The teacher shows the class the compost heap on page 26 and asks the students if anyone has a compost pile at their house. She explains to the class how a compost pile works and what compost is used for. If the students are interested, they can do further research on composting and even create a classroom compost bin. The elementary students use the information from Why Should I Recycle? to add to their answers on the board. Elementary Students Create a Recycling CommercialThe students are placed into cooperative groups to demonstrate their knowledge of how and why we recycle by creating recycling commercials. The students work together to write a script, assign and practice parts, and perform the commercial for their peers. The commercial is a video or audio clip that the teacher records. If the school has a television station, the recycling videos can be shown to the entire elementary school to teach all the kids about recycling. If there is no television the students can read their commercials over the school’s PA system. Elementary kids learn how to recycle by reading Jen Green’s Why Should I Recycle? during science class. The science teacher then has the students in their class create How to Recycle commercials to share recycling information with their fellow students.
