A new school year offers opportunities for easy and interesting writing projects. Students will enjoy writing about September, autumn, the new school year, and apples.

With so many things to think about at the beginning of the school year, simple activities are often best for both the teacher and the students. Here are some quick and easy to prepare writing projects for just such a time!

All About Me Book

Make a booklet of two sheets of white copy paper and one piece of construction paper. Fold the white paper in half and fold the construction paper in half. Staple the white pages inside. Have students write about themselves in order to introduce themselves to their new classmates. They can write a sentence or two on the bottom of the page and then either illustrate the books or cut out magazine pictures to illustrate.

The project can be open ended, or a topic can be assigned for each page to make all of the books similar in content. All of the books can be stored in a special box or basket in the classroom so the students can enjoy them at any time. (Hint: This basic book works well for any subject or topic!)

Back to School Classroom Newspaper

Have each student contribute a small piece about themselves for the back to school classroom newspaper. They can write a story, introduce another member of the class, write about their summer vacation, contribute a book review, etc. Compile all of the material into a newsletter and send home with students.

Favorite Fall Activities Diorama

Brainstorm a list of fun fall/autumn activities and post in the classroom. Have each student create a shoebox diorama of one of their favorite fall activities. Include a copy of their written piece “My Favorite Fall Activity.”
